When you find information on your family you have to be careful before you include it in your genealogy. Even if it looks like it's a fit, you still need to check and try to find sources that can connect the links. Below, I have listed problems I have with locating Alice Williston Cumming and her family in Canada and New York. Even though I have a lot of information on Alice, I haven't found her or her family in Quebec or Ontario. Here is the information that I have on Alice Williston Cumming. She was born in Jerusalem, Canada on September 26, 1828 and died in Sauk Centre, MN, USA on June 24, 1901. She is laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Sauk Centre, MN, USA. Her parents are Elisha Williston and Edith Davis both born in New York. All this information was on Alice's death certificate. A relative probably gave the parent's information - so you can't be positive that her parents were both born in New York. I found a Walter Cumming and an Elisa Willis?? on Sheet 32 Page 63 Line 14 and 15 of the Recensement-Canada Est 1851 Canada East Census, Deux Montagnes County, St. Andrew's Parish. I am not sure this is my Walter because Alice's obituary said they were married in Jerusalem, Canada on January 1, 1852. Walter Cummings obituary said that he came to La Chute, Canada at the age of twenty-three and the following year he was married. Walter was born in 1826 and it would have been 1849 when he came to Canada. If he were married the year after it would have been 1850. If this information is correct, then it could be them on the 1851 Census of Canada. In the book "The Kelloggs in the Old World and The New" by Timothy Hopkins, I found an Elisha Kellogg Williston married to an Eda Davis on page 200. It showed they both died in the Province of Quebec. There were no children listed. Here again, I can't make a positive connection because no children were listed for Elisha and Eda. Alice's obituary said she was the mother of nine children, eight of whom survive her, three sons, Clark, Walter and George and four daughters, Mrs. J. W. Gray, Mrs. William Gray, and Mary and Clara, unmarried. Three sons and four daughters add up to seven - so there might have been 2 children that died before or she might have only had eight children. As you can see, even with all the information collected I have a lot of questions to answer on the Williston-Cumming family. If anyone with the Williston - Kellogg - Cumming family surname has any information regarding these families please contact me. I would greatly appreciate it. Good luck with your family research. |
